TodSwim

Todswim is a Learn to Swim program designed specifically for babies. Babies between the ages of 1 and 3 years are taught to enjoy the water and become water safe by learning basic swimming techniques through songs associated with actions. This form of learning takes place with a parent in the water assisting the babies to learn. Babies feel safest with their parents with whom they have had the most interaction since birth.

Fun, games and songs are used to familiarise the little ones with water and to encourage water safety skills. The main focus of the Todswim program  is to improve safety in and around water. Lessons are balanced between a variety of activities and repetition.

At Stars the  Todswim lessons take place  in the middle pool; the water is waist deep for adults making it an ideal size to work in so that parents are comfortable in the water as well. The class size is up to 6 babies with their parents, and the instructor in the water. This provides enough space for everyone to move comfortably around the pool and to enjoy their own space. Babies are expected to do lessons twice weekly. Lessons are for 30 minutes at a time. There is also a step for babies to stand on. They do various activities while standing on the step.

What does my child need for lessons?

  • Swimming costume
  • Swimming cap
  • Swimming nappy
  • Towel

All these items are available for sale at Stars

The Todswim course lasts for three months and  can be repeated if the baby has not gained enough confidence in the first three months. Three months is ample time for most babies to acquire the skills needed to become water safe. Some babies take longer than others. factors are absenteeism because of illness. Sometimes the parents are ill and cannot bring baby. Often this results in catching up and baby takes a while longer than the required three months.
